During a recent meeting of the La Porte Independent School District (ISD) board, Chuck Cruz, the Democratic nominee for Texas House of Representatives District 128, delivered a passionate address highlighting the critical state of public education funding in Texas. Cruz, a Texas A&M graduate and former reliability engineer, emphasized his commitment to defending public education, citing his own experiences as a beneficiary of the system.
Cruz expressed concern over the actions of Governor Greg Abbott and the Republican Party, accusing them of undermining public education through a series of special legislative sessions aimed at cutting funding. He pointed out that despite Texas having a historic budget surplus, public school funding ranks a dismal 43rd out of 50 states. Cruz criticized the push for school vouchers, arguing that they divert taxpayer dollars from public schools to private institutions that lack accountability and choose their students.
Addressing the La Porte ISD board members, Cruz urged them to support candidates who prioritize public education, as the upcoming 89th regular session of the Texas legislature in January 2025 will once again bring funding debates to the forefront. He called for adequate resources for La Porte ISD and all Texas schools to ensure a legacy of excellence in education.
Cruz concluded his remarks by inviting support for his campaign, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to protect and enhance public education in Texas.
