City council approves affordable housing project in blighted area

In a recent city council meeting, officials moved forward with plans to address affordable housing in the community by discussing the disposition of a property located at 2305 West Cervantes Street, previously known as the Pensacola Motor Lodge. The council unanimously approved a public hearing scheduled for August 8, 2024, to further explore the potential for this site to provide affordable multifamily rental housing, aligning with the Westside Redevelopment Plan and relevant Florida statutes.

The council also declared the property as surplus and authorized its lease to Smith and Henze Affordable Group. This decision aims to transform the site, which has been viewed as a blight in the neighborhood, into a supportive housing project for veterans and individuals transitioning from homelessness. Mayor Reeves expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting its potential to revitalize the area and provide essential housing access.

During the meeting, Councilwoman Broughton raised a question regarding the current state of the property and its existing units, noting that there were two letters of interest received for the site. The council's actions reflect a commitment to tackling housing affordability and improving community conditions through strategic redevelopment efforts.
