City moves forward with ambitious middle housing rezoning plan

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the second phase of a city-initiated rezoning request aimed at expanding middle housing options. This phase follows the successful first phase, which rezoned over 1,700 properties to accommodate middle housing and high occupancy overlays.

The current proposal focuses on two specific areas, identified as Area 0, encompassing approximately 254 properties across 44 acres. These areas were previously deemed suitable for rezoning after consultations with neighborhood residents, development community representatives, and city officials, including the planning and zoning commission and city council.

Prior to advancing with the rezoning, city officials emphasized the need for resurveying these areas, as they had not been subdivided according to the new ordinance requirements. Public engagement sessions held earlier this year in February and March allowed residents to provide feedback on the proposed changes. An interactive engagement website was also launched to educate the public about middle housing and gather additional input.

The areas under consideration are designated as mixed residential on the comprehensive plan's future land use map, which supports a blend of moderate-density residential developments. This includes various housing types such as townhomes, duplexes, and small multiplexes, as well as limited single-family lots. The city aims to enhance housing diversity and accessibility through these rezoning efforts, reflecting a commitment to community engagement and sustainable urban development.
