In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around the reapproval of a term sheet related to the expansion of the Sarasota Players' facility at Payne Park. The project, which has evolved to include an increase in the site area from 1.6 acres to 2.1 acres, aims to enhance the existing auditorium while preserving its historic significance.
Marty Black, representing the Players, and other board members outlined the adjustments made to comply with city codes, particularly regarding parking requirements for evening performances. They emphasized their willingness to explore alternatives to reduce the parking footprint, acknowledging the availability of public parking nearby.
The proposed new structure will add approximately 1,700 square feet, representing a minimal footprint of just 0.1% of the 33-acre park. The board expressed a commitment to not only improving the facility for the Sarasota Players, a community theater with a 95-year history, but also to providing a venue for other local nonprofits that require performance space.
The project has been framed as an opportunity to diversify the arts scene in Sarasota, moving beyond the waterfront focus and creating a cultural hub in a different part of downtown. The board members highlighted the importance of having a venue that accommodates small to medium-sized organizations, which often struggle to find suitable performance spaces.
As the meeting progressed, the board reiterated their appreciation for the city staff's support throughout the planning process and expressed eagerness to move forward with the lease and further discussions on the project. The community's response to the proposed changes and the overall vision for the facility remains a key focus as the project develops.
