During a recent government meeting, the New Port Richey Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) presented its proposed operating budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, alongside a capital improvement project plan. Economic Development Director Mister Orbeck emphasized the integral relationship between economic development and community redevelopment in the city, noting that as New Port Richey is largely built out, ongoing redevelopment is essential for economic growth.
The CRA, established in 1988 as a dependent special district, is tasked with implementing a community redevelopment plan aimed at revitalizing nearly the entire city, excluding areas annexed since 2002. Orbeck highlighted the importance of adhering to Florida statutes regarding the use of tax increment revenue, which is strictly allocated for redevelopment purposes and cannot be diverted to other city services.
Key initiatives outlined for the upcoming fiscal year include the completion of the CRA master plan, which will incorporate the Leisure Van Doren study area, and a necessary finding of redevelopment viability. Other strategic priorities involve redeveloping the former hospital site, revitalizing the Historic Gulf High School, and supporting various community projects such as the Richey Suncoast Theater and neighborhood improvements.
The CRA's focus on multi-year projects reflects a commitment to sustainable development, with many initiatives expected to span three to five years. The agency aims to foster a renaissance in downtown New Port Richey and its surrounding neighborhoods, enhancing the city's appeal as a walkable waterfront historic hometown in Florida.
