Neighbors demand action as property violations escalate

Concerns over neighborhood safety and property maintenance were at the forefront during a recent government meeting, where officials discussed ongoing violations at a property in Marco Island. Complaints from neighbors regarding rats, coyotes, and general safety prompted a thorough investigation into the property, which has been described as problematic.

On June 3, 2024, code enforcement officer observations revealed multiple violations, including litter and debris, which contravene Marco Island's code 18-36. The officer documented the conditions with photographs, highlighting issues such as a tipped-over porta potty leaking liquid, broken fencing, and significant litter accumulation. The property, reportedly owned by individuals residing in Miami, has been a source of ongoing concern due to neglect and lack of maintenance.

A notice of violation was issued, requiring compliance by June 10, 2024. However, follow-up inspections on June 11, July 16, and July 29 indicated that the property remained in violation, with additional litter and structural issues persisting. The officer noted that the property has a history of violations, including previous fines for overgrown weeds and encroachments.

The meeting underscored the importance of addressing such violations to ensure community safety and uphold neighborhood standards. The ongoing neglect of the property raises concerns about public safety, particularly for children, due to open holes and deteriorating structures that pose hazards.
