During a recent government meeting, the achievements of local student-athletes were celebrated as part of the annual spring athletic awards ceremony. Hosted by Doctor Lawson and led by Amy Sexton, the instructional coordinator for physical education and athletics, the event highlighted the impressive accomplishments of athletes across the county.
This spring season saw participation from 593 middle school and 1,012 high school student-athletes, with 542 free physicals conducted to support their health and readiness. Notably, six teams emerged as divisional winners, including Rising Sun High School's girls lacrosse and Perryville High School's boys lacrosse, among others. Perryville High School also claimed the title of county champion for unified bocce.
In a remarkable display of talent, the spring season yielded a record-breaking ten regional champions, surpassing previous years. Among the standout performances were individual athletes like Jacob Blankenship in discus and Caroline Mercer, who became a two-time state champion in girls discus, achieving a personal best of 133 feet 4 inches.
The ceremony also recognized the importance of sportsmanship, with awards presented to four teams for their exemplary conduct. The Rising Sun High School Unified Bocce Team, Perryville High School Girls Lacrosse, and Beau Manor High School Girls Lacrosse were among those honored.
As the event concluded, the community expressed pride in the athletes' achievements, emphasizing the role of sportsmanship as a core value in fostering teamwork and respect among competitors.
