During a recent government meeting, representatives from Amtrak presented an update on the Susquehanna River Bridge project, which aims to replace the aging infrastructure critical to the northeast rail corridor. The existing bridge, over 117 years old, has been identified as needing significant upgrades due to operational constraints and maintenance challenges.

Cornell Brown, assistant superintendent for operations, introduced the Amtrak team, including Dexter Fordyce, senior program director, who outlined the project's history and current status. The project began in 2013 with inspections and feasibility studies, leading to an environmental assessment completed in 2017. This assessment confirmed no significant impact, allowing the project to move forward into the final design phase, which faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The proposed improvements include constructing two new bridges and realigning approximately five miles of track. These upgrades are expected to enhance rail service reliability, operational flexibility, and safety, while also providing employment opportunities during the construction phase. The first bridge is projected to be completed by 2031, with the second following by 2036.

A significant aspect of the project involves the impact on Harris Field at Havre de Grace Middle High School. The construction will require some expansion onto school property, but efforts are being made to minimize disruption. Plans include relocating athletic facilities and modernizing them to meet current standards. The timeline for these renovations is tentatively set for 2025-2026, with a focus on avoiding interference with school sports activities.

Amtrak's community engagement manager, Denise Miller, emphasized the importance of maintaining open communication with the local community throughout the project. Amtrak has already participated in local events and is looking to support STEM programs in the area, aiming to foster a positive relationship with residents during the construction period.

The meeting concluded with a Q&A session, where community members expressed excitement about the project and sought clarification on timelines and safety measures. Amtrak representatives reassured attendees that safety and security would be prioritized, with plans for updated fencing and temporary barriers during construction.
