In addition to housing legislation, the House also tackled the pressing issue of nonconsensual deep fake images. House Bill 5569, which imposes civil liability and criminal penalties for the creation and dissemination of such images, sparked significant discussion. While the bill aims to protect individuals from the harmful effects of deep fakes, several representatives expressed concerns about specific provisions, particularly regarding the lack of defenses for accused individuals.

Supporters of the bill emphasized the urgent need for protections against the misuse of technology, citing alarming statistics from the FBI about the rise of sextortion cases involving minors and the severe emotional distress caused to victims. The proposed legislation seeks to establish clear penalties for offenders and safeguard the dignity and privacy of individuals.
