In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the establishment of the Wyoming State Shooting Complex, aimed at enhancing economic development through shooting sports and outdoor education in the state. The proposed facility will be governed by a Joint Powers Board, which will consist of nine members appointed for staggered terms of one to three years. This board will oversee the construction and operation of the complex, which is projected to cost approximately $16.3 million, with the state contributing $10 million.
The board will also have the authority to accept operational funding from the state and other financial contributions, although there is a need for clarification regarding the acceptance of state grants. The legislative services office is expected to review this aspect to ensure compliance with state laws.
Officials emphasized the urgency of moving forward with the project, aiming for operational readiness by June 2026. To achieve this, they plan to initiate fundraising efforts to cover the remaining $5.3 million needed for the project. The board will also be responsible for maintaining a budget that aligns with county budgeting processes.
Additionally, discussions included the necessity of conducting cultural and resource assessments to facilitate the project's progress. The task force has indicated that expert advisors will be brought in to assist without additional financial burdens on the local community, with an estimated $40,000 allocated for this purpose.
The meeting concluded with plans to place the formation of the Joint Powers Board on the agenda for the next meeting, scheduled for August 27. This step is crucial for advancing the project and ensuring that all necessary preparations are in place ahead of the upcoming legislative session.
