Infrastructure overhaul sparks economic growth in Puget Sound area

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant developments in the Puget Sound Industrial Center (PSIC), highlighting plans for the Belfair bypass and a comprehensive market strategy aimed at enhancing the region's business climate. The bypass, which will connect to Lake Flora Road, is expected to increase traffic and investment in the area, particularly benefiting the Pisick community.

The meeting emphasized the importance of a market study that involved major landowners in PSIC, focusing on potential zoning code changes to facilitate development. The area, previously known as the South Kitsap Industrial Center, has been rebranded to better reflect its geographical significance and attract businesses from across Washington State.

Officials also outlined the zoning flexibility available within PSIC, including a planned action ordinance designed to streamline environmental permitting processes. This ordinance allows developers to bypass separate State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) reviews if they meet certain criteria, potentially supporting the creation of up to 10,000 jobs in the area.

Sustainability was a key theme, with guidelines introduced to incentivize environmentally friendly building practices. Developers can earn points towards increased impervious surface coverage by implementing sustainability measures, with the possibility of receiving refunds on building permit fees and expedited reviews for achieving certifications such as LEED Silver.

Additionally, a minor amendment was made to the development regulations regarding native vegetation retention, allowing for flexibility in landscaping requirements under specific conditions. The meeting concluded with an update on the ongoing wastewater functional plan, underscoring the commitment to infrastructure development in the region.
