In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the urgent need for an emergency no wake ordinance in response to rising water levels affecting local waterways. The proposal, which aligns with guidelines from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), aims to implement the ordinance immediately and maintain it until water levels recede to 11 feet.
The ordinance would cover the entire length of the river within Goodhue County, extending from the dam to the county border at Lake Pepin. Officials noted that neighboring Pierce County has already passed a similar ordinance, which will help streamline enforcement and public awareness efforts. The no wake zone will be posted at seven public access points, including boat ramps, to inform residents and visitors.
During the discussion, concerns were raised about the increasing frequency of rain events and whether the ordinance could be adapted for future weather patterns. Officials indicated that further discussions would be necessary to explore the potential for a more flexible ordinance.
The board is expected to finalize the ordinance soon, with the goal of ensuring safety on the waterways during this period of elevated water levels.
