During a recent city council meeting, Councilmember Hug opened the session with a reminder of two significant observances: National Cheesecake Day and National Whistleblower Day. The latter, celebrated annually on July 30, honors the vital role of whistleblowers in reporting corruption and misconduct.
Councilmember Hug highlighted the historical significance of the day, noting that it commemorates a unanimous resolution passed by the Continental Congress in 1778. This resolution recognized the bravery of Lieutenant Richard Marvin, midshipman Samuel Shaw, and eight other sailors who reported abuses against British prisoners by Commodore Hopkins.
The council meeting also included standard procedural announcements, with an affidavit of publication on file and a reminder of the open meeting act available for public review. The session underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in government, aligning with the spirit of National Whistleblower Day.
