Zachary Kykendahl, marketing director of the Disc Golf Pro Tour and board member of the Merced Disc Golf Club, provided an update on the club's youth initiatives during a recent meeting. Since March, the club has been hosting free monthly youth disc golf tournaments in Merced, aimed at engaging local children with the sport.
Kykendahl reported that the inaugural tournament served as a clinic, introducing over 30 children to the rules and fundamentals of disc golf. Following this successful start, participation remained strong, with more than 15 kids returning for subsequent events in April and May. The tournaments have since evolved into competitive events, showcasing the participants' growth and improvement in the sport.
Highlighting the broader benefits of disc golf, Kykendahl emphasized the life skills that children develop through participation. He noted that the sport fosters mental resilience, patience, and emotional control, teaching kids how to handle setbacks both on the course and in life.
Additionally, the Merced Disc Golf Club Youth Council is collaborating with local schools, including a vibrant disc golf program at Thomas Alita in Atwater, where over 12 students are actively involved in after-school activities centered around the sport. Kykendahl's commitment to youth development through disc golf underscores the club's mission to promote not only athletic skills but also personal growth among young participants.
