During a recent government meeting, discussions centered on the preservation of Tustin's military history, particularly focusing on the city's blimp hangars and airbase. Pete Mayne, representing the Tustin Military History Group, emphasized the importance of collaboration with local organizations, including the Tustin Museum and American Post 2/27, to strengthen efforts in this area.
Rick Nelson, also from the Tustin Military History Group and the Tustin Area Historical Society, expressed full support for this initiative. He proposed a three-way partnership involving the city to enhance the effectiveness of their preservation efforts. Nelson requested that the city designate a liaison to facilitate communication between the historical groups and the city government.
Brian Delahut, a former Marine stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Tustin, highlighted the interest among veterans to engage with the historical sites. He suggested forming an ad hoc committee to brainstorm potential uses for the hangars and proposed opening them to the public for a day, allowing citizens to explore and connect with their local military heritage.
The meeting underscored a collective desire to revitalize Tustin's military history and engage the community in preserving its legacy.
