During a recent government meeting, community member Larry Edwards shared his transformative experience with ATX Peace, a local organization focused on violence prevention and mental health support. Edwards, who joined the program after his release from jail, highlighted the significant impact it has had on his life and the community.
Edwards recounted how, within just two days of starting his job with ATX Peace, he and his colleagues successfully intervened in a potentially violent situation in North Austin without involving law enforcement. He emphasized the importance of dialogue in deescalating conflicts, noting that their approach prevented harm and fostered peace.
He also described another incident where ATX Peace staff intervened in a physical altercation at a busy intersection, again avoiding police involvement and promoting a peaceful resolution. Edwards urged the council to support ATX Peace, asserting that their efforts are making a meaningful difference in the community.
The meeting continued with other community leaders, including Rizor Daz Gutierrez, the executive director of Projektotetro, who were invited to share their insights and initiatives aimed at enhancing community safety and well-being. The discussions underscored the importance of grassroots organizations in addressing violence and promoting mental health resources in the community.
