Winter Guard triumphs as champions after 15 years
During a recent government meeting, the achievements of the Benjamin Weaswell High School Winter Guard were celebrated, as they secured first place at the Carolina Winter Ensemble Association Championships on April 6, 2024. This victory marks the first time since 2009 that the Winter Guard has earned the title of Scholastics Regional A Champions, competing against 37 groups from South and North Carolina. The team, part of the award-winning Panther band, is coached by Denisha Thompson. Members of the Winter Guard were acknowledged for their hard work and dedication, receiving applause from attendees.

The meeting also addressed several ordinances during its second readings. The council approved the rezoning of property located at 532 West Columbia Avenue from C-1 General Commercial to C-2 Office and Institutional Commercial. Additionally, another ordinance was passed to rezone properties at 361347 Highland Avenue from R-1 Single Family Residential to R-1A Single Family and Manufactured Housing Residential. This change was noted to align with previous uses of the property.

Furthermore, the council moved forward with an ordinance to annex property located at 226 Bobcat Road, consisting of 1.9 acres. Each of these motions received unanimous support from the council members present.

In new business, the council introduced a resolution to declare August 17, 2024, as Linda Martell Day, recognizing contributions to the community. The meeting concluded with a sense of accomplishment regarding both local achievements and legislative progress.
