In a recent government meeting, John Doran, a volunteer coach with the Helena American Legion Baseball Program, presented an extensive update on the significant renovations completed at Kendrick Legion Field. This project, the largest in the program's history, was accomplished in just 19 days and involved nearly $300,000 raised through community sponsorships and partnerships.
Doran highlighted the installation of 35,000 square feet of artificial turf and 35 tons of Major League Baseball clay in the infield, which has dramatically improved playability. He noted that the field has not experienced any bad hops throughout the summer, enhancing safety and performance for players. Additionally, new drainage systems were installed to prevent flooding in the dugouts, a recurring issue in previous years.
The renovations also included the rebuilding of the pitcher's mound to Major League specifications, new safety fencing, and aesthetic improvements such as painting the dugouts and home run fence. Doran expressed gratitude for the support from city officials, including City Manager Burton and Parks Director Smith, emphasizing the strong partnership between the Helena American Legion Baseball and the city.
The revitalized field has already made a significant impact, hosting the double-A state tournament and attracting record attendance. Doran expressed optimism for the future, hoping to continue hosting state and regional tournaments, which are vital for the local economy. With baseball's popularity at an all-time high in Helena, the improvements at Kendrick Legion Field position the community for continued success in the sport.
