During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the finalization of a new program aimed at honoring military veterans from the Fort Pierce community. The initiative, which aligns with the city's strategic goal to engage the community, will celebrate individuals who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces.
The program will allow active, retired, or honorably discharged members of the military, who are current or past residents of Fort Pierce, to be recognized through the display of commemorative banners. Applications can be submitted year-round, either by the honoree or a sponsor, with a nominal fee of $100 to cover the design and fabrication of the banners.
The banners will be displayed at Veterans Memorial Park, utilizing 14 available street light poles. Each banner will be double-sided, weatherproof, and measure 18 inches by 36 inches, with a display period running from November 1 to June 1 for two consecutive years, or until the banner deteriorates. After this period, the banners will be returned to the applicants.
City officials expressed enthusiasm for the program, noting its potential to foster community pride and recognition of local heroes. Discussions also touched on the possibility of expanding the program to other locations in the city, contingent on visibility and aesthetic considerations. The initial rollout will be on a first-come, first-served basis, with plans for a waitlist if demand exceeds the available banners.
The program's details will be made available on the city’s website, and officials plan to promote it through various channels to ensure community awareness and participation.
