Southern Grove DRI plan approved amid community concerns

During a recent government meeting, significant discussions centered around zoning amendments and development plans in Port St. Lucie, particularly focusing on the Southern Grove Development of Regional Impact (DRI) and a proposed self-storage facility.

The meeting began with a review of a self-storage facility application, where board members discussed existing municipal codes that restrict certain business operations, including the use of storage units for personal business activities. The applicant clarified that while the facility is intended for RVs and larger boats, it could also accommodate other vehicles, such as skidoos.

Following this, the board moved to the Southern Grove DRI, which is undergoing its 11th amendment. This amendment aims to refine the development plan for the area, which spans approximately 3,606 acres and is approved for a mix of residential, retail, office, and industrial uses. The proposed changes include a shift in land use classifications and the realignment of Marshall Parkway to facilitate future infrastructure improvements.

Bridget Keene from the planning and zoning department presented the details, emphasizing that the amendment does not alter any existing conditions of approval but rather enhances the overall land use strategy. The board unanimously approved the motion to adopt the amendment, reinforcing the city’s commitment to developing a cohesive and functional community.

The meeting concluded with a special exception use request for a volleyball facility, which was also met with no opposition from the public, indicating a smooth path forward for the proposed recreational development.
