In a recent government meeting, the commission addressed several key items, including the approval of extension requests for two final plats and a significant historic landmark designation.
The first item discussed was a final plat for a property exceeding 18 acres at the northwest corner of East University Drive and Old North Road. Although the property did not meet all criteria for approval, the commission unanimously approved an extension request to September 25, 2024. This decision was echoed for a second final plat, approximately 45.6 acres located at the northeast corner of FM 1173 and Motch Branch Road, which also failed to meet approval criteria but received the same extension.
The meeting also featured a public hearing regarding the historic landmark designation of a property at 1526 Willowwood Street, built circa 1978. The structure, designed by the notable Houston-based architects Anderson and Wilson, is recognized for its contemporary style and unique features, including artist studios. The property has historical significance due to its original owners, the Feldman family, who were influential in the local Jewish community, and subsequent owners who contributed to the University of North Texas.
The commission's analysis highlighted the property’s architectural importance and its connection to significant community figures, ultimately supporting the landmark designation as it aligns with the city’s historic preservation goals. The meeting concluded with a commitment to further public engagement should any postponed items be rescheduled for discussion.
