In a recent government meeting, officials discussed a request for historic landmark designation for a property located at 1900 Westridge Street, currently owned by Mary Seymour. Originally constructed in 1978 for Horace and Eulene Brock, the home showcases a unique take on contemporary architectural style, designed by the notable Mount Miller Architects, known for their significant contributions to the Denton community.
The property, situated on approximately 0.68 acres in the Demian neighborhood and zoned for single-family residence, has had three owners since its construction. The staff's analysis indicated that the property meets specific criteria for historic designation, particularly highlighting the influence of its architects and original owners on the local community.
Mount Miller Architects, led by Tom P. Miller and Isabelle Mount, were instrumental in shaping Denton's architectural landscape from the 1950s to the early 2000s, designing nearly 300 residences in the area. Their work includes notable structures such as the former Denton fire station number 4.
The original owners, Horace and Eulene Brock, played significant roles in the social and civic fabric of Denton. Eulene served as the city's mayor and was a founding member of the Denton Christian Women's Interracial Fellowship, while Horace had a distinguished career at the University of North Texas.
The staff recommended approval of the historic landmark designation, citing its alignment with the Denton 2040 comprehensive plan and the 2019 historic preservation plan. The meeting concluded with an invitation for questions, underscoring the community's interest in preserving its historical heritage.
