In a recent meeting of the Minneapolis City Council, a resolution was passed to officially recognize August 4 through 10, 2024, as Farmers Market Week in the city. Councilmember Jenkins presented the resolution, highlighting the significance of farmers markets as vital sources of healthy food, economic development for local farmers, and community gathering spaces.
The resolution emphasizes the role of farmers markets in promoting healthy eating and supporting local economies. Since the launch of the Homegrown Minneapolis initiative in 2008, the city has worked to enhance the community's access to sustainable and locally grown food. Currently, there are 16 farmers markets operating in Minneapolis, with a collaborative effort involving the city, the University of Minnesota, and various market supporters to promote these markets.
In 2022, Minneapolis farmers markets collectively generated $15 million in vendor sales and engaged over 500 vendors, attracting approximately 1.3 million visitors in 2023. The markets also play a crucial role in addressing food insecurity, with programs like market bucks and the Farmers Markets Nutrition Program (FMNP) facilitating access to fresh produce. Notably, 66% of market vendors donated leftover produce to hunger relief programs in 2023, and customers redeemed over $345,000 in market bucks and SNAP EBT benefits.
The resolution not only celebrates the upcoming Farmers Market Week but also underscores the importance of these markets in fostering community health and economic vitality in Minneapolis.
