During a recent McKinney Independent School District (ISD) board meeting, significant achievements in the district's fine arts education were celebrated, alongside key administrative announcements. The McKinney ISD visual art department was recognized for earning the prestigious Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) District of Distinction honor. This accolade places McKinney ISD in the top 5.5% of art education districts in Texas, a distinction achieved by meeting a rigorous 14-point rubric that reflects excellence in art education across the classroom, district, and community. The award will be formally accepted at the TAEA administrators conference in November.
In addition to the recognition of the fine arts department, the board announced the appointment of Jenny McGowan as the new senior director of elementary teaching and learning. McGowan brings 19 years of educational experience, including a decade in administrative roles. Her previous positions include director of professional learning and various leadership roles in curriculum design and instructional coaching. She is set to oversee professional learning initiatives for all staff, including the implementation of a district-wide program for new teachers.
The meeting also included a brief pause for public comment, allowing community members to voice their opinions on agenda and non-agenda items. However, it was noted that one item, the TASB policy update, would be removed from the agenda and addressed in the upcoming September board meeting. The board expressed gratitude for community participation and emphasized the importance of these discussions in shaping the district's future.
