Community celebrates completion of transformative accessibility project

In a recent government meeting, officials celebrated the completion of a significant infrastructure project on Pfeiffer Road, which has been in development for several years. The contractor, Austin Tyler, successfully finished the project approximately seven weeks ago, but the activation of traffic signal switches is pending approval from the state of Illinois, which oversees Route 30.

The new intersection features audible signals that are ADA accessible, allowing individuals with disabilities to navigate the area more easily. Residents have already reported positive experiences, including one individual who can now safely access downtown via the newly connected trails, significantly improving mobility for those with mobility challenges.

The project faced delays due to permitting issues with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and rising oil prices, which inflated engineering estimates by over half a million dollars. The board opted to pause the project until economic conditions improved, ensuring responsible use of taxpayer funds.

Additionally, the village announced it has secured a grant from the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus aimed at enhancing public safety through clean energy initiatives. This funding will further support the community's infrastructure and safety efforts. The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts of the board and past trustees in bringing the comprehensive plan to fruition, marking a significant milestone for the village.
