During a recent government meeting, significant strides were announced regarding mental health support and community engagement within the school district. The meeting highlighted the ongoing partnership between the district and Communities in Schools, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing essential support to students.
Since its inception in the district during the shift to virtual learning in 2020, Communities in Schools has expanded its reach to every campus, offering individual case management to over 2,500 students. This initiative focuses on improving attendance, behavior, and academic performance by addressing barriers to success and providing mentorship.
The meeting honored Jessica Weaver, CEO of Communities in Schools, for her leadership and the organization's impactful work. The district also recognized the contributions of Veronica Sandoval, the district's Communities in Schools director, and Conrad White, the field manager.
A key announcement was the receipt of a project aware grant, making the district one of only two in Texas to receive this funding. This grant will enhance mental health services over the next five years, allowing the addition of six clinical counselors to support students across all campuses. Furthermore, a new community educator role will be established to assist parents through educational programs.
The meeting underscored the district's commitment to addressing the increasing mental health needs of students, with plans for ongoing collaboration with various stakeholders, including Texas Health and Human Services. The collective efforts aim to create a supportive environment that empowers students and families, ensuring that every child has the resources needed to thrive academically and emotionally.
