City Council approves major budget boost for street improvements

The City Council of Jonesboro, Arkansas, has moved to amend its Fiscal Year 2024 budget to allocate an additional $1.5 million for street overlay projects. This decision comes as the city approaches the completion of a $1 million contract with Atlas Asphalt Incorporated, which has been responsible for current overlay work.

During the meeting, it was noted that the city’s Street and Engineering Department, utilizing recently implemented pavement management software, identified several streets in need of repair. The proposed amendment will allow for the inclusion of these additional streets in the ongoing asphalt projects.

The council's resolution aims to amend the capital improvement fund to facilitate this increase, bringing the total budget for street overlays in 2024 to approximately $2.6 million. The council discussed the progress made in 2023, where $2 million was allocated for similar projects, and provided an overview of the streets targeted for improvement with the new funding.

The motion to amend the budget and contract with Atlas Asphalt was seconded and will be forwarded to the full council for further consideration. Council members were encouraged to review the attached documentation detailing the road conditions and planned overlays before the next meeting.
