Cricket, a game with roots in the United Kingdom dating back to the 19th century, has gained significant popularity worldwide, including in the United States, where over 200,000 individuals participate.

California is emerging as a key hub for American cricket, hosting two of the six Major League Cricket teams and preparing to reintroduce the sport as an official Olympic event at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, the first time since 1900. The sport holds particular cultural significance for many members of California's South Asian diaspora, who view it as an integral part of their heritage.

Despite its growing popularity, cricket has yet to be recognized as an official high school sport in California, limiting students' opportunities to engage in the game. ACR 211 seeks to address this gap by urging the CIF to consider cricket for official recognition if proposed by member schools. The resolution also emphasizes the importance of supporting cricket at the collegiate level.

Dan Sahadeo, president of the Davis Cricket Club, provided testimony in support of the resolution, highlighting the need for youth engagement in the sport. He noted the challenges faced in introducing cricket into physical education programs but expressed optimism that fostering youth participation could lead to future Olympic representation.

ACR 211 not only celebrates cricket's rich history but also aims to secure its future within California's educational framework, ensuring that the sport continues to thrive and inspire the next generation of players.
