During a recent government meeting, officials engaged in extensive discussions regarding the fire protection contract between the village and the town of Belton, which has been in place for approximately 60 years. The most recent agreement expired at the end of 2023, prompting negotiations that began in the fall of 2023. However, no resolution has been reached, creating uncertainty for both parties.
The town operates on a calendar year budget, and for 2022, it authorized $537,000 for fire protection services. This amount was increased by 13% to $538,000 for 2023. For 2024, the town has authorized a distribution of $560,000 to the village, reflecting a 4% increase from the previous year. Despite this authorization, the village has been unable to deposit a partial payment from the town due to the absence of a formal contract.
Officials emphasized the importance of reaching an agreement to ensure continued fire protection services for residents. The town's budget committee expressed confidence that a one-year provision at the authorized amount could be established, urging the village to seek a resolution that would benefit both communities. The discussions highlighted the need for timely action to avoid disruptions in essential services.
