In a recent government meeting, officials highlighted the commendable efforts of the public works and utility teams in maintaining essential services during a recent storm event. Mayor and council members expressed gratitude for the uninterrupted water supply, which was particularly noteworthy given the extensive power outages experienced during the storm. The Mayor emphasized that the community often takes such services for granted, but the hard work of the utility team ensured that residents did not face a boil water notice or service disconnections.
The meeting also acknowledged the voluntary curtailment by Niagara Bottling Company, which played a crucial role in preserving water availability in the industrial zone during the initial response phase. The Mayor noted the strong support from local businesses and corporate partners, who reached out to offer assistance during the crisis.
Emergency Management Director Jennifer Henninger provided an overview of the city's response to the storm, including the swift establishment of a disaster shelter at Wilson Recreation Center. Within two hours of activation, the shelter was operational, accommodating up to 55 individuals at a time. The Red Cross assisted in managing the shelter, which also allowed residents to keep their pets close, enhancing the comfort of those affected.
Henninger reported that the shelter operated from the 22nd to the 1st, with plans to ensure continuity of summer activities for children impacted by the storm. The city utilized a program called Bridal Cleanup to coordinate volunteer efforts and address the needs of residents, which included over 1,100 requests for assistance. While 39% of these requests have been resolved, nearly 500 remain open, indicating ongoing recovery efforts.
The meeting underscored the community's resilience and the collaborative response from various sectors, including local government, businesses, and volunteers, as they work together to support those affected by the storm.
