During a recent government meeting, significant recognition was given to nine Caltrans workers for their heroic actions in saving lives under perilous circumstances. Secretary Omishakin and other officials presented the Governor's Medals of Valor, highlighting the bravery and selflessness of these employees.
The highest honor, the Gold Medal of Valor, was awarded to Jeff Klute, a bridge maintenance supervisor from District 4, for his courageous act of rescuing a man trapped in a burning vehicle in Solano County on July 7, 2023. Eight others received Silver Medals of Valor for their remarkable rescues, including Sultan Abbasi from District 12, who saved an unconscious motorcyclist after a crash on a busy freeway in Orange County.
Additional commendations included Danny Dube from District 2, who rescued a woman from a rolled-over vehicle in Siskiyou County; Kenny Myers, Bruce Perry, and Daryl Van Nada from District 3, who saved a driver and five passengers from a burning vehicle in the Sierra Nevada; and Michael Butner and Gonzalo Garcia from District 1, who helped a couple trapped in heavy snow in Mendocino County. David Ray Sumaya from District 7 was also recognized for rescuing two travelers from floodwaters on Interstate 5 during winter storms.
The honorees expressed their gratitude, emphasizing that their actions were simply part of their duty. Klute noted the importance of taking time to help others and encouraged safe driving practices. The meeting concluded with a video showcasing the dedication of these workers, reinforcing the message of putting public service first.
