Caltrans mourns tragic loss of dedicated maintenance worker

During a recent Caltrans meeting, Director Taylor addressed the tragic loss of Alex Rodish, a dedicated maintenance worker who was killed on July 22 while working along Interstate 5 in San Clemente. Rodish, who joined Caltrans in 2021 through a transitional employment program, was recognized for his commitment and rapid advancement within the organization. He leaves behind a family, including his brother, who also works for Caltrans.

In response to this tragedy, Caltrans has initiated several support measures for Rodish's family and colleagues. The California Transportation Foundation established a memorial fund to assist his family, while District 12 has maintained open communication with them regarding survivor benefits. Additionally, critical incident counseling sessions and peer support resources have been made available to staff affected by the incident.

The meeting also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance worker safety in light of Rodish's death. Caltrans is implementing new technologies aimed at improving visibility in work zones, such as remote-controlled traffic attenuators and lighted traffic zones. Wearable safety gear, including lighted harnesses and high-visibility vests, is being piloted to further protect workers.

Moreover, Caltrans is prioritizing the use of physical barriers to safeguard workers and the traveling public. The agency has over ten approved barrier systems and is deploying mobile barrier trucks on construction sites. Innovations like the HAAS Alert System and work zone intrusion alarms are also being introduced to enhance safety and response times in critical situations.

In addition to these safety initiatives, Taylor shared a recent incident where Caltrans maintenance crews assisted a stranded motorist during a heatwave, underscoring the agency's commitment to public service and community support. The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of Caltrans' dedication to improving safety for both workers and the public, emphasizing that every life lost on the roadways is a tragedy that drives their ongoing efforts for improvement.
