In response to the impending storm, local officials have announced the opening of several free storm shelters across the region, set to be operational by 6 PM today. The designated shelters include Westside Elementary School, which will serve as a special needs shelter, as well as the Winfield Community Center, Richland Community Center, and Fort White Community Center. These facilities are prepared to accommodate residents seeking refuge from the storm.
Officials emphasized the importance of these shelters, particularly for vulnerable populations, and noted that they may transition into recovery shelters if flooding occurs after the storm passes. Preparations are in place to address potential river flooding in both the northern and southern areas of the county.
Additionally, a pre-landfall declaration with FEMA has been partially accepted, allowing Columbia County to qualify for public assistance under Category B. This includes emergency protective measures and reimbursement for mass care operations, such as shelter management and emergency operations center activities. Residents are encouraged to document their expenses to facilitate potential reimbursement.
Operational updates revealed that emergency staff began assessments early yesterday, distributing over 4,700 sandbags to residents. Six permanent pumping stations are operational, with additional portable pumps on standby. A damage assessment team is prepared to mobilize as soon as conditions allow.
The Citizens Information Center is also now active, providing residents with a resource for inquiries unrelated to emergencies, such as garbage collection and other community services. Officials expressed gratitude for the community's support as they transition into full operational mode in preparation for the storm.
