In a recent government meeting, the Barnet School District celebrated the achievements of students participating in the Real Media Awards, a program aimed at preventing adolescent substance use. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Barnet Communities That Care Coalition, integrates an evidence-based e-learning curriculum into the health education of 8th graders.
The program encourages students aged 11 to 17 to engage with open-ended questions and quizzes, culminating in the creation of anti-substance use messages through posters or 30-second videos. These projects not only contribute to their health grades but also enter students into a contest judged by the Barnet Communities That Care public relations work group.
During the meeting, winners from the 3rd and 4th marking periods were announced, with prizes including certificates and gift cards sponsored by local community partners, notably the Barnaget Police Department. Kiana Bennett secured 3rd place with her poster, earning a $50 gift card. Angelina Colavita and Majabin Majid shared 2nd place honors, each receiving $75 for their impressive video projects. The top prize went to Emma Cuber for her impactful poster, which earned her a $100 gift card. Additionally, Krupam Patel and Mackenzie Serkovich were recognized for their creative stop-motion LEGO video, also receiving $50 each.
The winning entries will be showcased in schools and on the district's website, contributing to awareness efforts during Red Ribbon Week next year. The event highlighted the importance of youth engagement in substance use prevention and the role of community support in fostering healthy choices among students.
