In a recent government meeting, officials announced a significant reduction in the property tax millage rate for the third consecutive year, decreasing it by 2.25%. This decision aims to provide financial relief to residents and business owners while addressing the growing demand for public services as the community expands.
To enhance public safety, the city plans to hire six fire medics and four additional police department positions. Furthermore, the construction of a new recreation center on Burns Road is underway, with proposals for three full-time positions funded by revenue generated from recreation programs. The city also intends to add two full-time golf positions at the NEST PAR 3 to improve management of food and beverage services.
The proposed budget for fiscal year 2025 includes a total of over $263 million, with significant allocations for personnel costs, which have risen due to inflation and market adjustments. The budget reflects an increase in property values, with new construction contributing an additional $514 million and an 8.16% rise in existing properties, leading to a total property valuation of $19.8 billion.
The city’s budget review board has noted the continued decrease in the millage rate, which is now set at 5.0537, significantly lower than pre-recession rates. This reduction is expected to result in minimal changes to property tax bills for most homesteaded properties, while non-homesteaded properties may see increases ranging from $175 to $409 annually.
The meeting also highlighted the city’s commitment to maintaining a healthy reserve balance and managing costs effectively. The proposed budget includes a five-year capital improvement plan, earmarking funds for various projects, including a nature trail in Avenir, which will be supported by matching grant funding.
As the city prepares for upcoming budget hearings, officials encourage residents to engage with the budget process through the online platform OpenGov, where detailed information about planned projects is available. The next public hearing is scheduled for September 19th, providing an opportunity for further discussion on these developments.
