In a recent government meeting, officials highlighted significant strides in community engagement and sustainability efforts. The meeting opened with an update on data availability, confirming that new information is now accessible.
A key focus was on waste reduction initiatives, particularly a recent repair clinic held on May 1, where 663 pounds of materials were diverted from landfills. Over 60 community members participated, learning to repair various household items, including appliances, clothing, and bicycles, further promoting sustainability.
The food and waste staff reported engaging with more than 615 individuals during May and June, coinciding with the start of the tabling season. Sustainability team members have been active at local markets, including the Flagstaff Town and Mountain Town Markets, where they interacted with 96 community members over four events.
Social media outreach was also a highlight, with the department's Facebook page reaching 28,469 people and engaging 747 users, resulting in a follower increase to 10,339. On Instagram, posts reached 11,322 users, with 839 engagements and a follower count rising to 2,354.
The meeting concluded with a discussion on opportunities for youth engagement in climate initiatives, reflecting a growing concern among community members about the future of young people in relation to climate change. The commission is currently seeking new applicants to fill a vacancy, emphasizing ongoing efforts to involve the community in sustainability practices.
