In a recent government meeting, the City’s Community Review Committee (CRC) discussed proposed modifications to signage and color standards for a property located at 123 San Marco Avenue, home to the Ocean Avenue Sports Bar. The application, identified as HP 2024-0051, seeks approval for the use of non-approved paint colors and neon signage, which necessitates a thorough review due to existing design standards.
The applicant, represented by Whitney Hobbs and Rob Crabtree, presented their case, emphasizing that the proposed neon signage—featuring yellow lettering with a pink accent—aligns with the mid-century elements of the building. However, the CRC noted that the proposed neon colors would stand out from the more traditional neon signage currently found along San Marco Avenue, which predominantly features reds, whites, blues, and yellows.
Additionally, the application includes five proposed colors for the building's exterior, exceeding the design standards that allow for a maximum of four colors. The colors include two shades of teal, dark blue, black, and gray. The CRC must decide whether to approve the additional color or request a reduction to comply with the standards.
During the discussion, the applicant defended the vibrant color choices, arguing that they reflect the lively, Caribbean-inspired atmosphere of their establishment, Boat Drinks. Hobbs expressed a desire to maintain a vintage aesthetic rather than a modern, tacky look, asserting that the colorful design would enhance the property without detracting from the overall streetscape.
The CRC's decision will hinge on whether the proposed modifications meet the intent of the existing design standards, which prioritize a cohesive and muted color palette along the corridor. The committee is expected to deliberate further on the application, weighing the applicant's vision against the established guidelines for the San Marco Avenue area.
