During a recent government meeting, Jackie Conrad from Friends of Animal Rescue provided an update on the organization’s activities, highlighting a significant influx of animals, particularly kittens, in recent months. In May alone, 62 animals were taken in, with 45 finding new homes. June has also seen a busy start, with 43 animals entering the shelter, primarily through animal control.
Conrad invited the community to a rescheduled event at the SPI Community Center, where attendees can view blueprints for a new building intended to enhance the organization’s operations. The event, originally planned for the previous morning, will now take place on Tuesday. Additionally, she announced the upcoming \"Raise the Roof\" fundraising event, which aims to support building campaigns and maintenance, scheduled for the following week at Lagoona Bob. Tickets are priced at $20 and will include an entree and live auctions.
Conrad also mentioned the return of \"Camp Kindness,\" a free educational program for children aged 5 to 12, which will run on Saturdays at the community center. The program aims to teach children about animal care and has previously attracted both local and tourist participation.
In other discussions, staff members acknowledged the efforts of Christina and Oscar in maintaining beach conditions, while John provided an update on the island's storm sewer drainage system. He noted that recent heavy rains and high tides related to a tropical storm have impacted drainage efficiency, but public works crews are actively monitoring the situation and planning for future improvements.
The meeting also included a budget workshop for the fiscal year 2024-2025, where council members discussed the budget preparation process and reviewed various departmental presentations. The budget committee has been working on the document for the past two months, ensuring all plans and performance metrics are thoroughly evaluated.
