In a recent city council meeting, members voted to approve a second passage of a bond order amounting to $200,000, aimed at funding improvements at the Jefferson and Wilson intersection. The decision, prompted by a request from Mayor Anna Friedman, reallocates unused bond premium funds from a 2019 project related to the Jefferson Bridal design.
Councilor Merkel, who moved for the adoption of the bond order, emphasized the importance of the Jefferson Wilson intersection project, which is currently underway and is considered a priority for public safety. The project includes the installation of a traffic light, scheduled for September, along with road repaving and repainting efforts to enhance safety for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Councilor Morsello addressed concerns regarding the ongoing construction, clarifying that the project is only partially complete. He noted that the new traffic light and road adjustments aim to alleviate safety issues, particularly for pedestrians, following recent incidents in the area, including a fatality and two pedestrian injuries. Morsello highlighted the need for careful planning to ensure that the intersection remains safe while accommodating vehicle traffic.
Additionally, the council is exploring traffic calming measures on nearby side streets to manage potential increases in traffic as drivers seek alternative routes around the new light. The council's commitment to improving safety at the intersection reflects a proactive approach to addressing community concerns and enhancing public infrastructure.
