In a recent government meeting, members discussed the successful completion of the Police Unity Tour, which honors fallen officers and raises funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Valerie Zamperia, mother of Officer Zamperia, who was killed in 2016, and Joanne Jackson, widow of Officer Jackson, who died in 2005, participated in the three-day cycling event. The tour involved a 100-mile ride on the first day, followed by 85 miles on the second day, culminating in a 50-mile ride to the memorial in Washington, D.C. Over 2,000 participants, including officers and supporters, gathered to honor the fallen, with funds raised contributing to the memorial's maintenance.
The meeting also addressed public safety recruiting and retention strategies for the Dallas Police Department (DPD). Major Polly Ashford and Chief Israel Herrera provided updates on the department's hiring process, highlighting the implementation of a new employee referral program and monthly virtual Q&A sessions for prospective recruits. They reported that 785 applicants were referred by civil service in the current fiscal year, with 133 entering the academy. However, concerns were raised about the significant drop-off in candidates during the hiring process, particularly in the background checks and psychological evaluations.
The Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) also presented its recruitment strategies, noting the hiring of nine single-function paramedics and ongoing partnerships with local educational institutions to attract new talent. The DFR aims to onboard 60 new recruits in the upcoming class scheduled for July.
Overall, the meeting underscored the ongoing efforts to enhance recruitment and retention within public safety departments, while honoring the sacrifices of those who have served.
