During a recent government meeting, community member Angela Lockett passionately addressed the need for significant improvements in the local school system, echoing sentiments shared by fellow attendees. Lockett emphasized the importance of having specific requirements outlined in school contracts, including the need for a robust curriculum, online course offerings, and additional educational opportunities such as summer and Saturday school programs.
Lockett highlighted the necessity of basic facilities, pointing out that students should not have to endure inadequate restroom supplies, such as toilet paper and soap. She expressed frustration over the current state of the schools, stating that the lack of basic amenities sends a negative message to students about their worth.
Furthermore, Lockett voiced her concerns regarding school safety and the quality of food provided to students, asserting that these factors contribute to declining enrollment. She shared her personal experience of removing one child from the Gary School Corporation due to safety concerns and expressed her desire for both of her children to attend Westside schools, contingent on improvements being made.
Lockett concluded her remarks by calling for accountability among school officials, urging them to prioritize the needs of students over financial compensation. She stressed the importance of creating a positive educational environment that fosters pride and respect among students, advocating for a collective effort to enhance the overall quality of education in the community.
