Morgan Hill is gearing up to welcome the Special Olympics torch, known as the Flame of Hope, as it passes through the city on June 27. Local police and community members are invited to cheer on the torchbearers along Monterey Road, from Vineyard Boulevard to Cochran Road, between 11 AM and noon. The torch will eventually reach the opening ceremonies at Santa Clara University.
During the recent city council meeting, Council Member Martinez Beltran highlighted several community events, including an olive oil tasting that showcased the local Olive Grove, and a fundraiser at Topgolf for the League of Cities. He also discussed ongoing efforts to clean local waterways, emphasizing collaboration with the San Jose City Council to protect the Coyote area.
In a significant public comment, Bridal Bayardo, a representative from the North Cal Carpenters Union, addressed the council about the urgent need for improved development standards in Morgan Hill. He pointed out that local construction workers are facing inequitable conditions, including low wages and lack of benefits. Bayardo urged the council to establish standards that ensure fair treatment for workers, advocating for the hiring of accredited apprenticeship programs to support local labor.
Eli Robles, a union carpenter and Morgan Hill resident, echoed these concerns, sharing his experiences and the challenges faced by workers in the area. He called for a dialogue to improve job safety and fair compensation in the construction industry.
Additionally, Maddie Scariot, director of the Poppy Jasper International Film Festival, expressed gratitude to the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse for its support over the years, highlighting the venue's role in promoting filmmakers and discussions on women in the film industry.
Lastly, Sharon Luna from the San Martin Neighborhood Association raised concerns about the concentration of mental health residential facilities in her area, citing issues such as trespassing and safety concerns related to nearby registered sex offenders. She called for better communication between local authorities and the community to address these challenges.
