During a recent government meeting, the Canton City Council received a comprehensive presentation on the Downtown Master Plan from Kirsten Moat of Modern Mobility Partners. The plan, developed over the past year, aims to enhance economic development while preserving the unique charm of downtown Canton. Key components of the plan include transportation improvements, land use strategies, and public art initiatives.
Moat highlighted the extensive community engagement process, which involved over 20 stakeholders and more than 100 businesses and residents through various activities and an online survey. This feedback was crucial in shaping the plan, which proposes reducing traffic lanes, improving pedestrian safety, and increasing parking spaces to alleviate congestion and enhance the downtown experience.
The plan also addresses land use and urban design, focusing on zoning and development potential in the area. While the majority of properties are privately owned, the plan outlines conceptual ideas for infill development that could revitalize the downtown landscape.
In addition to the master plan, the council heard from Jamie Foreman, chair of the Canton Cultural Arts Commission, who discussed the importance of public art in the city’s development. Foreman reported on successful initiatives, including the public art master plan and various mural projects that have positively impacted the community and local businesses. Upcoming projects include a living wall installation and sculpture acquisitions for local parks, aimed at enhancing community engagement and beautifying public spaces.
The council expressed appreciation for the presentations and the community input that has shaped these initiatives. They plan to review the Downtown Master Plan further, with potential adoption slated for later this month or next. The meeting underscored the city’s commitment to fostering a vibrant downtown that reflects the desires of its residents while promoting economic growth and cultural enrichment.
