In a recent government meeting, officials provided an update on the construction progress of Stamos Sports Park, revealing that they are nearing completion of the construction documents and expect to be ready for bidding soon. The project is strategically timed to avoid competing with the upcoming Freedom Tree project, which has already received necessary permits and grants.
The park's design features a family area with six pickleball courts, including two covered courts, and a gathering space for tournaments and socializing. A unique \"solstice plaza\" will offer views across the park, while a family pavilion will include restrooms and shaded picnic tables. The park will also feature a splash and play area designed with a waterproof flooring system to enhance safety and maintenance.
In response to community feedback, the design incorporates a round basketball area with three hoops and three-point lines, allowing for casual play without the challenges associated with full-court setups. The park will also include a batting cage and maintenance building, which can double as a gathering space.
A notable addition is the pump track BMX area, aimed at both experienced riders and beginners, featuring a bicycle playground with traffic cones and small obstacles to encourage youth participation in cycling.
The project, located off Moore Road and Independence, is expected to take longer than initially planned due to a complete teardown and drainage overhaul, with an estimated completion date set for late 2025 or early 2026. Additionally, officials discussed plans for sports field lighting to enhance usability during evening hours, while ensuring that visibility for drivers on nearby roads is not compromised.
The Freedom Tree project is also progressing, with a public bid expected to be posted in August, followed by a timeline that anticipates completion by September 2025.
