In a recent economic development committee meeting, Cassie Hilgert, president and CEO of ArtsQuest, presented an ambitious plan for a new cultural center aimed at enhancing community engagement and economic growth. The proposed facility, to be located on the site of the current Banana Factory, will expand from 63,000 to 80,000 square feet, significantly increasing its capacity for educational outreach and tourism.

Hilgert emphasized the center's role in serving underrepresented communities and supporting local artists and businesses. The new facility will feature a variety of programs, including hot glass, ceramics, jewelry, and digital media studios, catering to both students and adults. A key component of the plan is the establishment of a 125-seat black box theater, which will host school field trips and evening performances.

The initiative also aims to address connectivity issues in the area by providing Wi-Fi access, encouraging local students to utilize the center as a resource for their educational and creative endeavors. In collaboration with the Bethlehem School District, the center will offer a pathway for high school students interested in arts and communications, equipping them with the necessary skills and experiences to build their portfolios for college applications.

Additionally, recognizing the mental health challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the center will include a healing arts and music space, in partnership with healthcare providers, to support community wellness. The design incorporates accessible spaces for individuals with sensory sensitivities, ensuring inclusivity for all community members.

The committee expressed support for the Local Share Account (LSA) request, which is crucial for funding the project, slated to begin in the first quarter of next year. This development marks a significant step forward in enhancing the cultural landscape and economic vitality of the region.
