Mayor fights for $2 billion transit project to boost economy

In a recent government meeting, the mayor emphasized the critical importance of the English Transit Connector project, a proposed 1.6-mile elevated monorail system designed to enhance connectivity in Inglewood. The project aims to link the K Line from Florence and Market Street to key venues, representing a significant investment of $2 billion, with $1 billion sourced from the federal infrastructure bill.

The mayor highlighted that this funding is exclusively designated for transit development and cannot be redirected to other initiatives, such as affordable housing. He stressed that if the project does not proceed, the allocated funds would be reallocated to other states, resulting in a loss of 17,000 jobs, a third of which are intended for local hires. Additionally, the project is projected to generate $868 million in prevailing wage jobs and stimulate $3.4 billion in economic activity within the county.

Drawing on his extensive experience in public service, the mayor underscored the historical challenges faced by Inglewood, including a significant structural deficit and declining local businesses. He argued that the transit connector is essential for revitalizing the city’s economy and ensuring sustainable revenue through increased tourism and local spending.

The mayor concluded by urging community support for the project, noting that it has garnered backing from 60 entities, and emphasized the urgency of securing an additional $300 million to move forward. He framed the initiative as a pivotal opportunity for Inglewood to shape its future and enhance its economic landscape.
