In a recent Kenner City Council meeting, officials discussed the establishment of the Laketown Improvement District, aimed at enhancing the aesthetic appeal of Williams Boulevard, a vital commercial corridor. The ordinance, which has been in discussion for several election cycles, seeks to remove outdated and unsightly signage, including poll signs, over a five-year period. This initiative is a collaborative effort with Jefferson Parish Council District 4, which will provide funding and resources for the project.
Mayor Glaser emphasized the importance of the Laketown area as an economic engine for the city, highlighting the anticipated increase in traffic due to developments such as the new land-based casino and the Pontchartrain Center. The ordinance includes a financial incentive for property owners to upgrade their signage, covering up to 75% of costs in the first year, decreasing to 50% in subsequent years.
Council members expressed unanimous support for the initiative, noting the long-standing issues with the visual appeal of Williams Boulevard. Councilwoman Bridal Bohannon, instrumental in securing funding for the project, reiterated the need for improvements to attract visitors and enhance the city’s image.
Concerns were raised regarding compliance and enforcement of the new regulations, with assurances from city officials that non-compliant properties would face restrictions on building permits after the five-year period. The council also discussed the importance of maintaining the improvements through effective code enforcement.
The meeting concluded with the council approving the ordinance, marking a significant step towards revitalizing one of Kenner's key thoroughfares. The initiative is expected to not only beautify the area but also stimulate economic growth by enhancing the overall visitor experience in the city.
