During a recent government meeting, council members discussed a motion to approve a four-month extension for a project in Santa Rosa County, which has faced scrutiny over environmental concerns. Councilman Snow initiated the motion, which received a second from Councilwoman Sebastio.
Public comments highlighted significant issues raised by Jenny Weber, a representative from Keep Santa Rosa Beautiful. She criticized the organization for failing to secure an environmental impact study prior to the project's commencement, stating that there was no documentation from the Department of Environmental Protection or the Water Management District on file. Weber expressed concern over the lack of a silt fence, a basic requirement intended to prevent sediment runoff into nearby protected wetlands. She questioned the city's response to repeated notifications regarding the absence and disrepair of the silt fence, emphasizing the potential harm to local ecosystems.
Weber also pointed out that Keep Santa Rosa Beautiful has been informed that they cannot operate in the building until a stormwater protection plan is completed. The council's decision on the extension comes amid these environmental concerns, raising questions about the project's compliance with necessary regulations.
