During a recent meeting of the Weslaco Independent School District Board of Trustees, significant achievements in student leadership and community awareness were highlighted. The meeting commenced with a celebration of the high school band’s drum majors, who were recognized for their leadership roles within the Wildcat Regiment and Panther Corps. Head drum majors Marlene Montemayor and Alexia Tirado, along with their assistant drum majors, were commended for their dedication and skills in conducting and marching, which contribute to the success of their respective bands.
Following the recognition of the students, Board President Jacqueline Sustaita proclaimed September 2024 as National Suicide Prevention Month and National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Additionally, the week of September 16 to 20 was designated as National Security Officer Appreciation Week, emphasizing the district's commitment to education and the well-being of its students.
The meeting also featured a public comment from State Representative Armando Martinez, who expressed pride in the accomplishments of the Weslaco ISD and its students. He presented a resolution honoring the Weslaco High School softball team for winning the 2024 UIL 6A state championship, marking a historic achievement as the first team from the Rio Grande Valley to claim this title. The resolution detailed the team's remarkable journey through the season and their thrilling comeback victory in the championship game.
