During a recent planning commission meeting, Assistant Fire Chief Roderick provided critical feedback on a proposed development plan, emphasizing the need for adequate fire department access and safety measures. He highlighted that the access road must maintain an unrestricted width of at least 20 feet, with specific requirements for the turns, including a minimum inside radius of 25 feet and an outside radius of 45 feet. The road, while functioning as a parking lot, must be designed to support the weight of fire apparatus, which can reach up to 77,000 pounds.
Chief Roderick also pointed out potential issues related to the property's grading and the need for fire hydrants at the back of the building. He noted that further evaluation would be necessary once a more definitive plan is available. Fire Chief Tom McCabe echoed these concerns, particularly regarding the proposed detention areas beneath the pavement and the placement of dumpster corrals, which could obstruct access.
The commission members acknowledged the importance of these safety considerations and voted unanimously to continue the public hearing on the preliminary planned unit development until the next meeting, allowing for further review and input from the fire department. This decision underscores the commission's commitment to ensuring that safety and accessibility are prioritized in the development process.
